Dungshwari Hill

Dungshwari Hill, also known as Pragbodhi (Prior to Enlightenment), is about 7 kilometers from Bodh Gaya but access is via Gaya and the journey is considerably longer, about an hour in a three-wheel auto-rickshaw. Legend has it that this is where Siddhartha practiced austerities for six years before descending to Bodh Gaya.
There are many beggars lining the path part way up the hill. Near the top is a small Tibetan temple with an image of the emaciated Siddhartha in a cave shrine.
It is possible to scramble up a pathway across the rock-strewn hill to the top where a magnificent view of the countryside spreads out below you. There is a great sense of peace at the top of the hill.
